Meet co-creator, writer and star of Sloppy Jones, Sophie Nation, who plays the hilarious wild child Rory Woods. We sat down with her on the set of Season 1 to get to know more about her love of iconic 90’s movies, her inspo behind the series and why she loves motels.
Sophie Nation interview
Why don’t you introduce yourself and your character?
Hi, my name is Sophie Nation and I’m playing Rory Woods. Rory is a twenty-something server and she grew up in Niagara Falls. She is really fun and outgoing and lives in a motel room with her best friend and co-worker Thomas [Collins]. However she is also needy and a bit insecure.
Motel life is pretty epic! I personally love motels, so filming here has been awesome. I just find there’s so much character in each detail in them – the heart-shaped jacuzzi is iconic.
On working with her fellow co-creators and show writers, Jamie Hart and Jonathan Neil Alexander and their inspiration behind the series, Sophie shared:
I have always really liked collaborating with Jamie and Jonathan. I think we work really well together, having fun and making it funny and campy. It was a really good channel for writing about our experiences in our twenties working at restaurants and dating but in a heightened absurd way.
It has all the relatability that I’m interested in, but also is kinda not really in this world – which I’m also interested in because I love escapism and escaping.

I think this project is really cool because I love 90’s slasher movies as well as comedy. Scream is one of my favourite movies – Drew Barrymore is an icon. Jawbreaker (1999) and the more 80’s horror like Blue Velvet (1986) were aesthetically very inspiring. The eeriness of it all was also very inspiring, in terms of body parts being scattered.

Without giving too much away, I’m really excited to see the characters fight for their goals, date each other and get heartbroken and date other people. I’m excited for the mess to unravel…and for more murders!
We asked: writing, acting or both?! To which she quickly replied: both!
I really like creating and seeing that vision come to life. It’s really cool. But I also really like acting. So both, forever.
It’s cool embodying a character you wrote because you can create the type of role you want and experiment a lot. You don’t have to fit stereotypes or other people’s ideas of what you should look and be like. You can be like “well I created this person, I know this person better than anyone.”
We put our hearts and souls into this and I’m really excited to get it out there and to do more. So check it out.
